QEUH Orthoplastics Service

The tertiary orthoplastics/limb reconstruction service is managed by the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The current limb reconstruction team at QEUH includes Mr Christopher Crome, Mr David Shields, and Mr Alistair Macey.

For all patients with identified injuries requiring orthoplastics input, please consult the ‘Orthoplastics Referral Guideline for Open Tibial Fractures’ below for advice and standards of care. While this form is principally designed for open tibial fractures, please note that all referrals to the service will now require this form to be completed.

1. All referrals must be made via telephone directly to the on call Orthopaedic Registrar at QEUH (0141 452 2735 / 82735). The minimum dataset required for telephone referral is:

  • Patient name & CHI

  • Referring unit & contact details

  • Mechanism & date of injury

  • Soft tissue status

  • Neurovascular status

  • Haemodynamic status and products given

  • Other injuries & current management

  • Details of any debridements that have taken place thus far

2. As well as telephone referral, the 'Orthoplastic Referral Form' must be completed by the referring registrar and sent to ggc.qeuhlimbreconservice@nhs.scot . Please include the patient surname and CHI in the email subject heading. Patients should be referred as soon as possible, 7-days a week. This mailbox is not monitored daily or without prompting from the telephone referral. An email without telephone referral will not receive a response.

  • Please complete all relevant sections thoroughly. Incomplete forms may delay assessment.

  • Attach relevant imaging (X-rays, CT scans) and clinical photographs if possible, or ensure access is provided.

  • Ensure patient consent for sharing information as per local guidelines.

  • Please send completed 'Orthoplastic Referral Form' form to ggc.qeuhlimbreconservice@nhs.scot via secure NHS email.

Each case will be reviewed by a limb recon consultant who will contact the referring department to accept for transfer, advise on management, or decline with reasoning. For cases requiring urgent advice and input, please contact the Orthopaedic Registrar on call in QEUH (0141 452 2735/ 82735). If there is any delay in reply beyond 36hrs, please contact the  Orthopaedic Trauma Coordinator in QEUH (0141 452 2737 / 82737).
